Strong AI

Strong AI (artificial intelligence) is the view that "the appropriately programmed computer really is a mind, in the sense that computers given the right programs can be literally said to understand and have other cognitive states." (P 277bf)

Two claims of strong AI:

1. an appropriately programmed machine "can literally be said to understand [a] story," and

2. "what the machine and its programs do explains the human ability to understand [a] story ..." (P 278b)

Searle denies both of these claims.
