Simulation vs. The Real Thing

"No one supposes that computer simulations of a five-alarm fire will burn the neighborhood down ... Why on earth would anyone suppose that a computer simulation of understanding actually understood anything?" (P 282b)

Three reasons for the confusion:

  1. confusion about the notion of "information processing" (P 282bf)
  2. residual behaviorism or operationalism (P 283ab)
  3. residual form of dualism (P 283b)
