"Formal" (Searle)

When Searle speaks of "formal" symbols, "all that `formal' means here is that I can identify the symbols entirely by their shapes." (P 279a)

"formal symbol manipulation" involves doing things with the symbols without regard to any meaning (or reference or truth or denotation or connotation) they have.
