Liberty Limiting Principles

Proposed principles that specify the conditions under which it is permissible to limit the liberty of a person.

"A person's liberty (freedom) may be limited (or restricted) in order to ..."

Harm Principle: prevent harm to others [other than that person]
Paternalism: prevent harm to that person
Welfarism: benefit others [other than that person]
Extreme Paternalism: benefit that person
Moralism: prevent that person from doing immoral (but not harmful) behavior
Offense Principle: prevent offense to others
Majoritarianism: accede to the wishes of the majority
