Why keep straight on
what is or is not up to us
Epictetus (P 506b)
If you confuse things that are up to you with things that are not:
- you will be impeded
- you will be grieved
- you will be troubled
- you will blame gods and men
If you keep straight on what is up to you and what is not:
- nobody will compel you
- nobody will forbid you
- you will not blame anyone
- you will not complain about anything
- you will not do a single thing unwillingly
- you will have no enemy
- no one will hurt you
